Flood survivors urgently need relief and essential health services.
The 2026 Floods: A Growing Humanitarian Crisis in Assam and Himachal Pradesh
Heavy monsoon rains, overflowing rivers, flash floods, cloudbursts, and landslides have devastated Assam and Himachal Pradesh, wreaking havoc on the lives and livelihoods of millions of people across the two states.
- Assam: Worst floods in six decades claimed 68 lives, left around 40 people missing, and affected over 6 lakh people, with 21 deaths reported on 21 July alone.
- Himachal Pradesh: Heavy monsoon rains claimed 15 lives, blocked 135 roads, and disrupted 44 power transformers and 38 drinking water schemes, leaving several communities cut off from essential services.
Families have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. Survivors now face a long road to recovery, with little more than what they could carry to safety.
PPHF is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local partners to mobilize urgent support for the most affected.
PPHF’s Proposed Response
- Targeting entire flood-affected districts of Assam and Himachal Pradesh, with a focus on hardest-hit areas.
- Coordinating with district administrations, local organizations, and medical professionals to deliver emergency health camps, food and nutrition kits, and hygiene and survival kits, including sanitary supplies and medical consultations and medicines to provide urgent care.
- Supporting government efforts to control post-flood disease outbreaks.
- Providing rehabilitation and livelihood support for displaced families.
- Continuing extended health services through periodic medical camps.
- Setting up platforms for psychosocial counselling and community preparedness for future disasters.
