Present position Dr. Sharad Onta, a medical graduate (MD) in 1984 from Leningrad – former Soviet Union (USSR), has master degree in public health (MPH) from UK in 1992. He completed Ph D in 1999 from Copenhagen, Denmark in health system research. Retired faculty of Tribhuvan University, Nepal He is founding General Secretary of Nepal Public Health Foundation (NPHF). Chair, Resource Centre for Primary Health Care, an NGO President, Physicians for Social Responsibility Nepal (PSRN) Country Coordinator, People’s Health Movement, Nepal Previous positions Dr. Onta was Professor and Head of the Department of Community Medicine and Public Health of Institute of Medicine, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu. His responsibilities included teaching International Health to MPH students, supervising public health master and Ph D students. He was a Member of Academic Council of Tribhuvan University, Member of Academic Council of National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) and Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS). Dr. Onta worked as Executive Director of a National NGO – Resource Centre for Primary Health Care during 1992-1994. In 2007, he was nominated by the Government of Nepal as Executive Member Secretary of Nepal Health Research Council, an authority to approve and monitor health research activities in Nepal. He was also nominated by the Government of Nepal as Executive Chief of HIV/AIDS and STI Control Board in 2009. He was a member of High Level Policy Advisory Body at the Ministry of Health and Population (2007-209). Dr. Onta served as a Senator of BP Memorial Institute of Health Sciences, a Deemed University under the Ministry of Health and Population during 2007-2009. Dr. Onta was Assistant Dean (Academic) of the Institute of Medicine, responsible for academic activities of the institute from 2012 to 2016. Health policy He is extensively involved in development of national health policies, planning and strategies. Dr. Onta contributed to development of national compact for International Health Partnership (IHP). His contribution has been remarkable in development of National Action Plan of HIV AIDS, implement Framework Convention of Tobacco Control (FCTC) in the country, formulate strategy of revitalization of primary health care, develop and implement public health education. He worked as a member of High Level Health Policy Development Committee (2017), formed by Council of Ministers for development of a new National Health Policy in the context of federalization of the country. His particular interest is in health finance system to address equity in health. Networking He has a wide links with several regional and international networks and has experiences of working in other countries. His involvement in People’s Health Movement at the regional and global level has visibly added voice to strategize social determinants of health. Dr. Onta is among the activist physicians to advocate for “peace through health”, as an International Councillor of Physicians for Social Responsibility, Nepal (PSRN), an affiliate to International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW). He is an active member of People’s Health Movement, Nepal Chapter to advocate in health right issues. Publications Dr. Onta has published several research articles in national and international journals, produced several reports and contributed to chapters of several books.
