Women, Adolescent and Child health

The Twenty-third special session of the UN General Assembly on the Beijing Plus Five, 2000, overwhelmingly endorsed that gender mainstreaming should be taken as the critical approach to attain gender equality in health, among others. The rights of women and giving them opportunities to reach their full potential is critical not only for attaining gender equality but also for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Girls and women often suffer from poorer health status than men, and improving their health will greatly impact the health status of children and families.

"We provide community-based solutions for and access to essential health care for adolescent girls, mothers, and children."

In addition, these efforts will result in enabling girls and women to realize their potential more completely, improving their quality of life and economic productivity, and will contribute to the economic growth and development of the country. PPHF believes that the underlying causes of the gender gap in health service delivery can be addressed by facilitating equal access to women and men in their use of preventive health care, their health behaviours, and their health care and treatment. We focus on gender- inclusive approaches for better health programming in collaboration with stakeholders.

How we mainstream Gender into our Programs?

In order to provide equal health opportunities, PPHF provide community-based solutions ensuring access to essential health care for all age group of the population including adolescent girls, mothers, and children through our health programs.

Policy and advocacy:

We prioritize gender equity in key health policies and programs through operational research and sensitizing program and policy leaders based on field evidence about gender equity issues, especially those related to girls’ and women’s health, and incorporate more accountability for gender equity into health programs and promote gender-disaggregated reporting of key health data for better programming.

Gender-sensitive and gender-specific health programs:

We design the delivery of healthcare services by focusing on the gender-specific health needs of women and men from the perspective of equal participation and creating an enabling environment to access health services.

Building Skills of Health Care Workers:

Based on long capacity-building experience, PPHF has recognized and prioritized the integration of gender equality aspects into health capacity-building programs through educational material and job aids to help raise awareness about gender equity. We build the sensitivity and capacity of health care providers and community workers to improve gender equity and to negotiate behaviour changes.

Expanding Community Support:

We develop and implement programs to end discrimination against the girl child, including in family feeding and healthy practices, use of health services and completion of secondary education, promote advocacy regarding the delaying age of marriage for girls through ongoing health programs, and promote gender equity by creating supportive community institutions for empowerment of women in the household and community by building the capacity of elected women representatives, rural youth, social workers and Self Help Groups (SHGs).

Impacting Outcomes

PPHF’s approach to monitoring and evaluation is participatory, evidence-based, and results- orientated. PPHF help donors and other stakeholders to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of their investments. Establishing community social support via a network of trained health workers and community volunteers that provides gender-inclusive peer support, training, counselling, individualized assessment of needs, targeted case management, development of family action plans, and direct assistance through structured home visits and referrals to other services are key to our community health programs. We create a sustainable future pathway to establish gender equality in health programming by addressing all crosscutting issues that affect women health viz. child marriage, access to dignified choices in family planning, menstrual health, and hygiene.
